CPJ: 129 journalists killed in 2025, two-thirds by Israel
Tokyo (ANTARA) - A total of 129 media journalists were killed while carrying out their duties throughout 2025, with two-thirds of them killed by Zionist Israel, according to the annual report of the world’s journalists’ organisation, Wednesday.
According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) report, Israel is responsible for two-thirds of the total number of journalist killings throughout 2025, which they committed during their military aggression in the Gaza Strip.
More than 60 percent of the 86 media personnel killed by Israel were Palestinian journalists who were carrying out journalistic duties from Gaza, the report said.
This record marks the highest number of journalist killings in two consecutive years - higher than the figure of 126 in 2024 - since the New York-based organisation began collecting data on journalist safety in 1992.
“Attacks on the media are a key indicator of attacks on other freedoms, and there are many steps that need to be taken to prevent these killings and punish the perpetrators,” said CPJ CEO Jodie Ginsbreg.
“We are all exposed to risk when journalists lose their lives while reporting the news,” she said, adding.
Furthermore, the Philippines, with three cases of journalist killings in 2025, placed the country at the top in Asia and fifth from all countries on the list.
All journalists killed in the Philippines last year were shot, including senior journalist Juan Dayang.
