Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Covid-19 cases have surged in Singapore. Local health authorities reported a weekly increase of over 50% in the past week.

Meanwhile in Indonesia, the Indonesian Ministry of Health reported new Covid-19 cases. Aji Muhawarman, Chief of the Public Communication and Information Bureau at the Ministry of Health, stated that as of Epidemiological Week 20 of 2026, or the third week of May, Indonesia recorded two new confirmed Covid-19 cases.

“Both cases were from Jakarta and Southeast Sulawesi,” Aji told CNBC Indonesia on Monday (25/5/2026).

With this addition, the total confirmed Covid-19 cases in Indonesia for 2026 reached 121, with no reported deaths. Aji confirmed that the dominant Covid-19 variant in Indonesia remains classified as low risk.

“The dominant variant in Indonesia is still low risk, and the national situation remains under control,” he added.

However, the government has urged the public to remain vigilant amid rising cases in Singapore and other Asian countries.

“The public need not panic over the situation in Singapore but should stay alert by monitoring global and national case trends and maintaining clean and healthy lifestyles,” Aji added.

According to The Straits Times, Singapore’s Communicable Diseases Agency (CDA) reported 12,700 Covid-19 cases for the period 10-16 May 2026, a sharp rise from the previous week’s 8,000 cases.

Hospital admissions for Covid-19 also rose from 56 to 73 patients per day during the same period. However, Singaporean authorities stated hospitals are still able to manage the surge.

The CDA said the rise in cases is likely due to waning population immunity against Covid-19. However, Singapore’s government stressed there is no indication that the current circulating variant is more transmissible or causes more severe illness than previous ones.

Variant NB.1.8.1 is now the dominant strain in Singapore, accounting for over half of genomically sequenced cases. Singaporean health authorities confirmed current vaccines remain effective against this variant.

The Singapore government has advised vulnerable groups, including those aged 60 and above, nursing home residents, healthcare workers, and individuals with certain medical conditions, to update their Covid-19 vaccinations. In addition to vaccination, citizens are urged to maintain personal hygiene, wear masks when unwell, and reduce non-essential social activities and travel when experiencing symptoms.
