Court urged to rule on Depok poll case
JAKARTA: Around one hundred Muslim women from Depok, West Java, held a rally in front of the Supreme Court here on Monday demanding that it quickly rule on the controversial decision of the West Java High Court on the Depok mayoral election dispute.
The protesting women urged the Supreme Court to soon hand down a ruling on the review petition filed by the Depok General Elections Commission (KPUD), which objected to the West Java High Court's ruling.
The West Java High Court last month controversially annulled a declaration that Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) candidate Nur Mahmudi Ismail had won the June 26 election, and instead declared Golkar Party candidate Badrul Kamal the winner. The Court ruled that 27,782 votes had been incorrectly given to Nur Mahmudi, and 62,770 votes taken away from Badrul.
However, those opposed to the ruling say it was based mostly on evidence given by Badrul supporters during the hearing, while no Nur Mahmudi supporters had been summoned to testify. --JP
