Country needs 'loyal' people
JAKARTA (JP): Commander of the Armed Forces (ABRI) Gen. Feisal
Tanjung said Indonesia needs more people who are dissatisfied
with current developments, yet trust the system enough to strive
for improvements from within.
People who are dissatisfied and yet loyal to the state
ideology Pancasila and the constitution will strive to make the
nation progress even farther, Feisal told a meeting of the chiefs
of military district commands in Bandung, West Java, yesterday.
"We need more people who are dissatisfied with conditions, but
believe that, with Pancasila and the Constitution, the national
stability and development can be maintained," he was quoted by
Antara as saying.
He said there are three groups of people, each with a
different view of national development. The first group consists
of "conservative people who are satisfied with the current
situation, and believe the existing system would bring even
greater improvement in the future".
The second group is constituted of "moderate people who are
dissatisfied with the current condition, but believe the system
can still be relevant in the future", he said.
The third group is comprised of "radical people who are
dissatisfied with the current condition and distrust the system",
he said.
Feisal asked the military leaders to treat the "non-moderate"
group wisely and educate it about the results of the efforts
towards national development and about the national ideology.
Feisal also told the military chiefs to guide their men in
"becoming role models for society and avoiding behavior which
might either offend public opinion or damage the image of ABRI".
Anticipating the heating up of the political climate in
anticipation of the 1997 general elections, Feisal asked all
military personnel to be alert, in order to prevent or handle
potential problems in society. (swe/fai)
