Councillors to submit wealth report

JAKARTA: In the face of mounting public pressure, city councillors finally agreed to submit individual reports on their wealth and assets to the Public Servants' Wealth Audit Commission (KPKPN), city council deputy chairman Djafar Badjeber said on Tuesday.

The councillors decided to submit the report mainly out of a sense of moral obligation, Djafar, who is also chairman of the city chapter of the United Development Party, told reporters on a sidelines of a dialog on Council versus KPKPN at Cempaka Hotel.

He said Law No. 28 on KPKPN did not specify councillors as public servants.

The councillors urged the House of Representatives to review the law and include them as public servants so that they could receive a monthly salary and pension.

The dialog, which featured constitutional law expert Bintan Saragih, KPKPN's chief Yusuf Syakir, Ferry Mursyidan Baldan of the House of Representatives and councillor Syarifien Maloko, concluded that it was subject to debate whether or not the councillors were bound by law to declare their wealth. --JP
