Corruption Proceeds: This Is What the Pharaoh's Chair Auctioned by the Attorney General's Office Looks Like
Visitors observe a replica of the Pharaoh chair at the BPA Fair display area of the Attorney General’s Office Asset Recovery Agency (BPA) in Jakarta on Tuesday, 19 May 2026. The BPA has been conducting an online auction of several seized items from corruption cases since Tuesday, 12 May, and continues until Thursday, 21 May, including the replica Pharaoh chair belonging to the convicted Jimmy Sutopo of ASABRI, with a reserve price of Rp 43,917,000. The item, named ‘Gold Pharaoh Chair – ’King Tutankhamen’s Egyptian Throne Chair’ Replica, is displayed in a yellow-gold colour with intricate ancient Egyptian relief carvings and a lion-headed design. The organisers confirm that only one chair unit is being auctioned to the public at this event, although a pair of chairs is on display at the venue without information about materials used. In addition to the chair replica, the Attorney General’s Office is auctioning other art owned by Jimmy Sutopo, including a large jade dragon statue with a reserve price of Rp 194,576,000. Several gold paintings by South Korean artist Kim Tae Il are valued at between Rp 1.3 billion and Rp 8.7 billion. The valuations are determined by the State Wealth and Auction Service (KPNL), not by BPA. Beyond the chair and statue, the AG’s Office has also seized other assets of Jimmy Sutopo, most of which are artworks such as paintings, musical instruments and sculptures.
