Corruption and social harm

From Media Indonesia

The crimes committed by corruptors are greater in magnitude
than those involving ordinary street criminals, many of whom are
forced to perpetrate offenses due to critical circumstances,
ignorance, poverty and other desperate problems.

Corruptors, on the other hand, are motivated by personal or
group interests, with the aim of enriching themselves through
deception, discrimination, as well as the abuse of rights and the
country's natural resources.

In their attempt to cripple the system and render it
ineffective, the impact they cause to the social aspects of
public life is also devastating. Meanwhile, Indonesia has so far
failed to raise the social standards of its people.

The programs for elimination of illiteracy and reduction of
school dropout rates, for instance, have failed. This has been
due to the tug-of-war between interest groups vying for their
illegal commission and the lack of concern for the nation's
priority problems.
