Corning wins PGN's contract
NEW YORK: Corning Inc. won a contract to supply undersea optical cables to a state-owned gas company in Indonesia.
A Corning spokeswoman wouldn't disclose the value the contract, although she said it was "relatively small."
Corning said in a press release Tuesday that Indonesia's PT Perusahaan Gas Negara will use the company's Vascade L1000 fiber, which is designed for short-haul undersea routes.
The Corning spokeswoman noted that this marks the first time this type of cable will be used in the region. The project should help the company further develop inroads into the market there, she said.
Corning, which makes optical fiber, cable and photonic products for the telecom industry, said the network will connect Sumatra to Singapore via the Indonesian island of Batam. The gas company, which will use about 9,400 kilometers of the Corning fiber, is developing a real-time gas-distribution management system that will require the cable's capacity of 10 gigabytes per second. -- Dow Jones
