Jakarta — The achievement of world standard certification such as Copper Mark has enabled PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) to significantly strengthen consumer confidence and solidify its position in the global market.

Sudirman Widhy Hartono, Chairman of the Indonesian Mining Experts Association (PERHAPI), believes that few Indonesian companies have obtained commodity certifications such as Copper Mark. PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) is among those that have successfully acquired this certification.

According to him, Copper Mark certification can help increase consumer, investor, and public confidence in the copper mining industry. It can also assist companies in enhancing their reputation and reducing operational risks.

“This certification helps increase consumer, investor, and public confidence in the copper mining industry. In addition, it helps companies improve their reputation and reduce operational risks,” Widhy told CNBC Indonesia on Monday (16 March 2026).

He further explained that with Copper Mark, copper mining companies are required to meet strict criteria. These include reducing environmental impact, respecting human rights, increasing transparency and accountability, and implementing responsible mining practices.

In Indonesia, the adoption of certifications such as Copper Mark can become an important instrument for improving the quality of mining governance whilst promoting the mining sector’s contribution to sustainable development.

“Additionally, Copper Mark certification is particularly important in several aspects, namely sustainability, transparency, and acceptance in the global market by enhancing competitiveness,” he said.

As is known, Copper Mark is an international certification framework in the mining industry that aims to ensure the responsible production of metals, particularly copper, molybdenum, nickel, and zinc from environmental, social, and governance (ESG) perspectives.

Established in 2019 in England by the International Copper Association, mining operations must pass an independent assessment against 33 criteria to obtain Copper Mark certification.
