Coordinating Minister Airlangga: WFH for Civil Servants Could Save State Budget Rp6.2 Trillion
The government has officially implemented a work-from-home (WFH) policy for civil servants (ASN) for one day per week on Fridays. This WFH policy for ASN one day a week could save the state budget (APBN) by Rp6.2 trillion due to reduced fuel consumption by the public. “The potential savings from ASN WFH directly to the APBN is Rp6.2 trillion in the form of fuel compensation savings,” said the Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Airlangga Hartarto, during a press conference on Tuesday, 31 March 2026. Not only that, the savings in public fuel consumption are also substantial at Rp59 trillion. “Meanwhile, total public fuel expenditure has the potential to be saved by Rp59 trillion,” he added. Airlangga explained that the one-day-a-week WFH policy for ASN will apply starting 1 April 2026. In addition, the government will enforce mobility efficiency, including a 50 percent restriction on the use of official vehicles, except for operational and electric vehicles, and encourage the use of public transport. “So, reducing official vehicles and using public transport to the maximum extent possible,” he further stated. The government also urges the private sector to implement similar policies to help build a new work culture. However, Airlangga said that the policy will consider the characteristics and needs of each business sector. “The regulation (WFH for the private sector) will later be through a circular from the Minister of Manpower, which also covers the energy efficiency movement in the workplace,” Airlangga continued. However, several sectors are exempted from this policy and are still expected to work in offices or in the field. These sectors include public services such as health, security, and cleanliness, as well as strategic sectors like industry, energy, water, basic goods, food and beverages, trade, transportation, logistics, and finance.
