Controversial! Elon Musk Says Retirement Savings Are No Longer Important, Why?

CEO Elon Musk has once again ignited controversy with his views on the future of the economy and employment. He believes that saving for retirement in the future is no longer relevant because developments in artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics will completely transform the global economic system.

Musk states that society does not need to worry too much about long-term savings as traditionally recommended by financial advisors. “Don’t worry about saving money for retirement in 10 or 20 years. That won’t matter,” Musk said, as quoted from Fortune on Monday, 27 April 2026.

He bases this statement on his belief that the world will enter an era of abundance thanks to AI, robots, and advancing energy technology. According to him, productivity increases will be so significant that the concept of scarcity will no longer apply.

Musk even predicts that in the coming years, artificial intelligence will surpass the collective capabilities of humanity. “By 2030, AI will surpass the intelligence of all humans combined,” he said.

He also estimates that the number of humanoid robots will exceed the number of humans on Earth, which will then replace many types of jobs, particularly office work.

“AI can do half or more of the jobs that exist today, except those requiring complex physical manipulation,” he added.

In that scenario, Musk imagines a world without the economic limitations we have now. He refers to the concept of universal income, not in the form of social assistance, but as unlimited access to goods and services.

“There will be ‘universal income: you can have whatever you want’,” he said.

In his view, the relationship between work, salary, and standard of living will change completely. Work will no longer be a necessity for survival, but rather a choice like a hobby.

“If you want to work, it’s like you can grow your own vegetables at home or buy them at the store. Growing them is harder, but some people still do it because they enjoy it,” Musk continued.

However, he also acknowledges that the transition to a world without mandatory work is not entirely without risks. One concern is the loss of meaning in life for some people when work is no longer the centre of life.
