Residents affected by flash floods in Sorkam District, Central Tapanuli Regency, North Sumatra, have begun independently constructing temporary shelters. To date, the temporary housing promised by the government has yet to be completed, whilst residents can no longer continue relying on evacuation tents.

At several locations, residents have been seen erecting simple structures on the foundations of their previously severely damaged homes. The materials used are makeshift — logs carried by the floodwaters have been repurposed as pillars and wall frames.

The flash floods that struck on 24 November 2025 destroyed dozens of homes. Since then, residents have been sheltering in emergency tents. However, the overcrowded and limited conditions at evacuation sites have prompted some families to opt for building temporary dwellings so they can resume their daily activities more freely.

North Sumatra Provincial Government Response

Meanwhile, the North Sumatra Provincial Government has assured that the construction of permanent housing remains underway. North Sumatra Governor Bobby Nasution stated that rehabilitation and reconstruction budgets have been prepared to assist residents whose homes were severely damaged.

“We are utilising available funds to help build permanent housing for residents whose homes were severely damaged,” said Bobby Nasution on Friday (20 February).

Bobby noted that each household classified as having a severely damaged home would receive assistance of Rp60 million. The funds are designated for the permanent reconstruction of their homes.

“I am here to ensure that the community can receive what they are entitled to. Especially during this month of Ramadan, they must be able to worship comfortably. I hope the disaster-affected residents can remain patient and strong in facing this calamity,” he said.
