Congestion Prevention: Two Tollway Sections Designated as "Buffer Zones" for Eid Holiday Exodus
JAKARTA — The Ministry of Public Works through the Road Toll Regulatory Agency (BPJT) and toll road operators (BUJT) have prepared a buffer zone scheme at several rest and service facilities (TIP) on two tollway sections leading to ferry terminals.
This measure has been implemented to anticipate vehicle congestion during the Eid 2026 (1447 Hijriah) holiday exodus.
Several rest areas on the Tangerang-Merak Tollway (Tamer) and Bakauheni-Terbanggi Besar Tollway (Bakter) will function as buffer zones to temporarily accommodate vehicles before they enter the ferry terminal areas.
This step is being taken to ease potential vehicle accumulation in ferry terminal areas, particularly at the Merak and Bakauheni terminals, which are critical transport nodes between Java and Sumatra.
“The buffer zone arrangement on these tollways is being carried out through intensive coordination between BPJT, BUJT, port operators, and traffic police to ensure vehicle distribution to the terminals proceeds more orderly and does not create long queues,” said Dody on Sunday (15 March 2026).
On the Tangerang-Merak Tollway section, toll operator PT Marga Mandalasakti has prepared rest areas at kilometre 43 and kilometre 68 on Lane A to function as buffer zones.
These facilities will temporarily accommodate holiday travellers heading to Merak Terminal so that vehicle flow into the terminal can be managed in stages according to ferry service capacity.
Meanwhile, in Lampung Province, toll operator PT Bakauheni Terbanggi Besar Toll has prepared several priority rest areas on the Bakauheni-Terbanggi Besar Tollway.
These include rest areas at kilometres 24, 49, 67, and 87 on Lane B as buffer zones for vehicles heading to Bakauheni Terminal.
The Public Works Ministry stated this measure is part of an integrated traffic management strategy during the Eid holiday period.
Through this arrangement, travellers are expected to have more orderly and smooth journeys, particularly at critical points such as access to ferry terminals.
The Public Works Ministry also urges the public to monitor traffic information, follow instructions from field officers, and use rest area facilities properly to ensure safe and smooth travel during the holiday exodus.
