Complaints about factory

From Pelita

The noise from a concrete producing factory in South Kedoya, West Jakarta is disturbing the peace of the residents in that area. The noise is especially disturbing in the evening, since it keeps residents awake.

Aside from the noise, the factory is polluting the area with cement dust and powder, which freely contaminate the air, especially in the surroundings of Puri Kembangan.

Several months ago, thousands of South Kedoya residents filed a complaint with the management of PT Betamix, after which the company drafted a statement that they were prepared to cease operations in the area and move the factory to another location.

But what happened? The factory never stopped operating. We do not understand how this could happen. With the factory's agreement to relocate operations, the company's move should have taken place by now. The authorities should have taken action against the company for its failure to do so.

The factory has been operating for two years. The residents have to cope with health problems. Most children living around the factory are suffering from chronic respiratory ailments because of cement dust in the air.

Thousands of citizens have repeatedly objected to the factory's operation in the neighborhood, especially since it is not equipped with a waste treatment facility.

Several months after the residents delivered their complaints, Trantib, a sub-branch of the local security sector, appealed to the factory to stop its activities. At the time, the company drew up a statement that it was ready to move to another location. The statement was drafted in the presence of an official of the Biro Bina Lingkungan Hidup DKI Jakarta (Environment Bureau of DKI Jakarta). It should be noted that the factory is located in a residential area, not in an industrial area.

We appeal to the Trantib authorities of West Jakarta to restore order in the area, in accordance with the Jakarta administration's town planning for West Jakarta.
