Competition Intensifies as Building Materials Producers Step Up Innovation
The building materials industry is facing changing consumer needs as design trends, the function of spaces and production technology evolve. Producers are expected not only to maintain quality, but also to offer materials with a wider range of functions and characteristics for homes and commercial buildings.
These changes are a key focus for Platinum Ceramics Group as it marks its 55th anniversary in 2026. The company is preparing to increase production capacity, expand its distribution network and develop products to keep pace with domestic and export market demand.
Platinum Ceramics Group CEO Liem May Tjoe said competition in the building materials industry required companies to keep adapting their products to changing consumer needs. Product innovation and consistent quality were important factors in maintaining a market position, she said.
“As we enter this new chapter, we see the building materials industry continuing to evolve alongside changing design trends, rising consumer needs and increasingly dynamic competition. We are therefore continuing our efforts to strengthen product innovation, maintain quality and offer material solutions that are relevant to market needs,” Liem said in a press release on Monday (19 October 2026).
Platinum Ceramics Group is targeting production capacity of 125 million square metres a year across its manufacturing facilities in Indonesia. The increase is intended to meet demand for ceramic and building-surface materials while broadening the company’s market reach.
“We are targeting production capacity of 125 million m2 a year as a strategic step towards becoming the market leader in Indonesia’s tile industry, supported by an expanded distribution network across Indonesia and the development of export markets,” Liem added.
The company’s products are currently sold in various parts of Indonesia and in several countries through exports. Platinum Ceramics Group operates PT Platinum Ceramics Industry, which includes Platinum Ceramics and Asia Tile, as well as PT Surya Multi Cemerlang, which includes Titanium Sintered Stone and Infiniti Granite Tile.
Product development ranges from variations in design to additional material functions. One innovation introduced this year is the Titanium Sintered Stone Lumen Series – Bio Luminance, which glows in the dark.
The product was recognised by the Indonesian World Records Museum (MURI) as the “First Sintered Stone with Bio Luminescence (glow-in-the-dark effect)”. The added function illustrates how producers are exploring product characteristics beyond materials’ basic role as surface coverings.
All four brands under Platinum Ceramics Group—Asia Tile, Platinum, Infiniti and Titanium—have also received halal certification. The company is further developing its market through a network of distributors, partners, architects, designers and applicators.
“We thank all our loyal consumers and business partners of Platinum Ceramics Group, who have been part of the company’s journey to date,” Liem said.
Changing needs in design and the function of spaces will continue to create opportunities for innovation in the building materials industry. Production capacity, product differentiation and the ability to anticipate market needs will determine producers’ competitiveness in the coming years.
