Dozens of residents evacuated to Masjid Al Jihad due to flooding in the Periuk Damai housing complex in Tangerang City held a communal breaking of the fast on Sunday (9 March 2026).

The mosque has served as a temporary gathering place for residents whose homes remain submerged in floodwaters since Sunday (8 March 2026).

As Maghrib time approached, residents began laying mats across the mosque floor. Rice boxes, snacks, and drinking water were arranged before them.

They sat together, enjoying simple meals that they had brought themselves or received from communal kitchens.

They interacted with one another and shared food, demonstrating solidarity despite facing the disaster.

The head of Neighbourhood Unit 03, Administrative Division 08 in Periuk Damai, Miftah, stated that this communal meal activity was customary among residents, including whilst in evacuation.

“Sometimes people contribute, sometimes people buy things. But we usually just eat together, gather as normal,” Miftah told Kompas.com.

“The subdistrict also has a communal kitchen. They’ll bring food here around five or half past five,” Miftah added.

Despite being in evacuation, residents continued to maintain their sense of community during Ramadan.

The mosque was filled with residents sitting closely together awaiting the Maghrib call to prayer.

For many residents, breaking the fast together in the evacuation centre became a simple way to provide mutual support amid the flooding disaster that continued to affect the Periuk Damai area.

The situation meant that flooding in the region remained severe, although parts of Tangerang City had begun to dry out.
