Communism still a threat
Communism still a threat
It was only to be expected that the release of Soebandrio,
Omar Dhani and Soetarto would lead to the venting of appeals and
views involving the various aspects of the 1965 communist coup
attempt. With regard to the personalities who were involved in
the attempt, it is logical that their release has given ground
for appeals to pardon other offenders as well, particularly by
allowing those who have fled abroad to return home.
However, there is a fundamental difference between
Soebandrio's case and those who now live abroad. Soebandrio and
his associates have received their lawful punishment, while those
who live abroad have never been tried.
We know that with the collapse of communism in the Soviet
Union and in Eastern Europe, communist powers are virtually no
longer a threat. However, the perpetuation in China of communism,
although with a different look, could at least morally encourage
those who hanker for the advent of a revamped Old Order as an
alternative to the present New Order. It is our impression that a
few tokens pointing in that direction are at present already
discernible.
It is our opinion that the only way to forestall such a
possibility is by ensuring a faithful and consistent
implementation of Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution.
