Commission IV Pushes for Swift Solutions to Address TPPAS Sarimukti Overcapacity
Commission IV of the West Java Provincial Legislature (DPRD) has assessed that the operational capacity of TPPAS Sarimukti in West Bandung Regency is becoming increasingly alarming. Zone V, which serves as the final disposal area, has reportedly exceeded its capacity and is estimated to be able to receive waste shipments for only approximately one more year.
Commission IV member Tedy Rusmawan stated that this condition has the potential to trigger a waste emergency if not anticipated immediately. The situation is growing more urgent because the replacement final processing facility, TPPAS Legok Nangka, is only targeted to become operational in 2029 — meaning there is a gap of approximately three to four years that must be addressed with concrete steps to keep waste management under control.
In response to this challenge, Commission IV of the West Java Provincial Legislature has issued a strong appeal to the public and local governments in the four cities and regencies that depend on TPPAS Sarimukti to conduct waste sorting from the source.
The proposed solutions include encouraging the public to discipline themselves in separating waste starting from the household level, and managing organic waste independently at the neighbourhood association (RT/RW) and sub-district levels so that it is not all sent to Sarimukti.
The commission emphasised that without immediate action from both local authorities and residents, the region faces a serious risk of a waste crisis well before the Legok Nangka facility comes online.
