Commission III Meets with Sukabumi Police Chief to Discuss Child Abuse Case
JAKARTA — Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives convened a public hearing regarding the death of Nizam Syafei, a child from Sukabumi, West Java, who is believed to have died as a result of abuse by his stepmother, at the Parliamentary Complex in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Monday 2 March 2026.
The hearing invited several parties, including the Sukabumi Police Chief, Nizam’s family, and his legal representatives.
Upon opening the session, Commission III Chairman Habiburokhman expressed condolences over Nizam’s death.
He explained that the hearing was not intended to intervene in the investigation process, but rather to ensure the case was pursued in accordance with applicable law.
“Based on the facts that exist, so that the deceased can truly receive justice,” said the Gerindra Party politician.
Habiburokhman also requested that the hearing be able to answer public questions that had been submitted to Commission III.
Regarding public suspicion that the perpetrator was not solely the stepmother, but that others were also involved—either assisting in the crime, committing the crime together, or allowing the crime to occur—Habiburokhman raised concerns.
“Based on video recordings also received by Commission III, there are strong indications of torture, abandonment, and neglect of the deceased. It should be questioned why people around him remained silent whilst the deceased was in critical condition, lying on the floor with thin bedding,” Habiburokhman stated.
When admitted to hospital, the victim’s body was covered in bruises and blistering resembling burn wounds.
Before his death, Nizam provided a statement to medical personnel and police that was captured in a viral video. He claimed he was forced to drink hot water by his stepmother.
Autopsy results contradicted the perpetrator’s alibi that the victim suffered from leukaemia.
