Commission III: Dismissal of Bripda MS demonstrates police commitment to maintaining integrity
Jakarta (ANTARA) – Deputy Chairman of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Moh. Rano Alfath, has stated that the Indonesian National Police’s decision to dismiss Bripda MS, who is suspected of child abuse, is clear evidence of the police force’s commitment to upholding institutional integrity. He believes that the police’s firm stance against members who violate regulations is a crucial indicator in measuring the credibility of the institution as a law enforcement agency in the eyes of the public. “This firmness is important to show the public that the police do not tolerate acts of violence, especially those that result in the loss of life, particularly that of a child,” he said in a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday. However, the legislator from the commission that oversees legal matters strongly condemned the perpetrator’s actions, which he said had violated humanitarian values. He emphasised that the authority granted by the state to members of the Indonesian National Police should be used to protect citizens, not as a tool for violence. Therefore, he welcomed the involvement of the Special Case Team of the National Police’s Internal Affairs Division, as well as assistance from the Professional and Internal Security Division of the National Police Headquarters, in overseeing this case. “It is not easy for an institution to take firm action against its own members, but it is in this that the integrity of the institution is tested. We appreciate the multi-layered oversight mechanism that has been established to ensure that the process is accountable,” he said. He also reminded that ethical sanctions in the form of dismissal are not the end of the matter. He urged that the criminal legal process against Bripda MS continue to completion in court to provide true justice for the victim’s family. “The dismissal is an administrative consequence, but criminal accountability must still be pursued. There must be no impunity in cases that result in the loss of life. Whoever the perpetrator, they must be held accountable for their actions before the law in a transparent manner,” he said. Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives, he said, is committed to continuing to oversee the handling of this case until it has legal force. He assured that the parliamentary oversight function will continue to ensure that the victim’s family receives maximum protection without any interference from any party. “Public trust is the primary asset that must be maintained through firmness, transparency, and consistency in law enforcement,” he said. The Maluku Regional Police has officially dismissed Bripda MS (Mesias Viktor Siahaya), a member of the Mobile Brigade who is a suspect in a case of alleged abuse of a student in Tual, resulting in the student’s death. The decision was made during a hearing of the Indonesian National Police’s Code of Ethics Commission, which lasted for 14 hours on Monday, from 2 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Tuesday (February 24). During the hearing, Bripda MS was found to have committed a reprehensible act and violated the Code of Ethics of the Indonesian National Police. However, he has stated that he needs time to consider the decision and has been given time to file an appeal.
