President Prabowo Subianto has disclosed the rationale for Indonesia’s continued participation in the Board of Peace (BoP) in pursuit of Palestinian independence. In response, Deputy Chairman of Commission I of Parliament Dave Laksono characterised the decision as part of Indonesia’s diplomatic strategy.

“Commission I of Parliament appreciates President Prabowo Subianto’s explanation regarding Indonesia’s position in the Board of Peace (BoP),” Laksono told journalists on Tuesday, 17 March 2026.

“We view this decision as part of Indonesia’s diplomatic strategy to maintain a seat at the international negotiating table, ensuring we have influence in pursuing a peaceful solution and Palestinian independence,” he added.

According to Laksono, Indonesia has consistently affirmed its commitment to supporting Palestinian independence since the outset. This, he stated, aligns with Indonesia’s free and active foreign policy.

“By remaining in the BoP, Indonesia is not merely an observer but plays an active role in advancing a fair and sustainable two-state solution,” he explained.

Furthermore, Laksono also responded to Prabowo’s statement affirming that Indonesia will not join any military alliance. He viewed this stance as appropriate and consistent with the principles of Indonesian foreign policy.

“Regarding the President’s statement that Indonesia will not join any military alliance, Commission I of Parliament considers this the correct and consistent position,” he said.

“Indonesia must not become trapped within a particular power bloc, but rather stand above its own national interests, maintain good relations with all parties, and remain focused on developing defensive military capabilities,” he continued.

The Golkar politician stated that this move demonstrates Indonesia’s commitment not only to Palestinian independence, but also to maintaining regional stability and the credibility of Indonesian foreign policy in the eyes of the world.

“Thus, Indonesia’s position in the BoP is a diplomatic instrument that strengthens the nation’s voice on global issues concerning peace and justice,” he concluded.

Earlier, Prabowo Subianto explained Indonesia’s membership in the Board of Peace (BoP) established by the United States. Prabowo affirmed Indonesia’s participation in the BoP to maintain influence in advancing Palestinian independence.

“If we are within it (BoP), we can still influence and work towards a long-term solution, which we believe is an independent Palestine and a two-state solution,” Prabowo said, quoted on Monday, 16 March.

Prabowo also affirmed that Indonesia will not join any military alliance. Indonesia, Prabowo continued, consistently implements the principle of free and active foreign policy, in accordance with the 1945 Constitution, namely not siding with any power bloc and actively fostering world peace.

“We cannot be part of any military alliance,” said Prabowo.
