Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Chairman of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Sukamta, hopes that the ceasefire agreement between the United States (US)-Israel and Iran is not merely temporary but can develop into permanent peace.

“We welcome this ceasefire and hope it can continue permanently. The world needs stability, and more importantly, no country should aggress against another,” he stated in a press release received in Jakarta on Wednesday.

According to him, the ceasefire is a positive step but must be accompanied by commitments from all parties to exercise restraint and not use force, including in the form of economic and energy pressures that could harm the global community.

He recalled previous ceasefires by Israel that left important notes, namely that Israel often violates existing agreements, both in Palestine and Lebanon.

“This is dangerous for realising regional peace. The relevant parties, especially US President Donald Trump, must ensure that Israel exercises restraint and complies with the ceasefire agreement,” Sukamta said.

The ceasefire momentum is also hoped to serve as an entry point for resolving broader conflicts, including the realisation of independence for the Palestinian people.

“We hope this ceasefire not only halts temporary escalation but becomes the initial step towards a fair and permanent solution, including independence for Palestine as a sovereign state,” he said.

On the other hand, Sukamta reminded of the importance of strengthening national resilience, particularly in the energy and economic sectors, so that Indonesia is not too vulnerable to global upheavals.

He views the current global conflict dynamics as having undergone significant shifts. Conflicts are no longer solely based on military power but have moved towards systemic pressures on the global energy and economic sectors.

In that context, strategic areas like the Strait of Hormuz play a crucial role in world stability.

Indonesia, he said, has significant interests in global stability, given the impact of conflicts on the energy sector, trade, and people’s purchasing power.

Therefore, Sukamta encouraged the government to continue prioritising active diplomacy and playing a strategic role in maintaining world peace.

“The importance of Indonesia’s role in international forums such as ASEAN, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and the United Nations to promote peaceful conflict resolution and reject all forms of inter-state aggression,” he stated.

He further hoped that the world moves towards just peace.

“Our hope is simple but fundamental: this ceasefire can run permanently, there is no more inter-state aggression, and the rights of the Palestinian nation can be fulfilled in the form of legitimate and internationally recognised independence,” Sukamta concluded.

Previously, US President Donald Trump announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran and stated that the Strait of Hormuz would soon be opened.

Following the announcement, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) confirmed that talks with the US would begin on Friday (10/4) in Islamabad, Pakistan.
