Cobras terrorize citizens

SEMARANG: Cobras have broken out of a snake farm and slithered
into neighboring offices and houses, sparking terror in the
southern suburb of Srondol.

Dozens of residents and office employees have filed complaints
with the police against the management of CV Bumi Makmur, which
breeds and exports the highly venomous snakes to Hong Kong.

"We have been working in fear since we saw a cobra in the
office," said Bambang Purnomo, an employee of the provincial
administration's archive department next to the snake farm.

Antara reported that CV Bumi Makmur, which is located on a
prime site near public office buildings and a residential area,
denies being in the business of breeding cobras.

Nonong, a resident, said the cobras have been spotted on the
loose and, as far as residents know, not all have been recaptured
or killed.

"A few days ago, three cobras sneaked into my house. Two were
captured and one escaped into the ditch," he said. (pan)
