CNG Prepared to Replace 3kg LPG, 30% Cheaper?
Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia has revealed that the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is currently testing compressed natural gas (CNG) for use in 3-kilogram LPG cylinders. Tests have found that the pressure of CNG is sufficiently high to be contained in 3kg LPG cylinders. “For the 3-kilogram size, the cylinders are still in the testing phase because the pressure is quite high. We expect results in the next two to three months,” Bahlil said, quoted from Antara on Tuesday (5/5/2026). The plan is for CNG to replace LPG in order to reduce natural gas imports. Before being implemented widely among the public, CNG is already used in the hospitality sector, restaurants, and the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) kitchens because the raw material is abundantly available domestically. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is studying subsidy schemes, although the mechanism and volume are still under discussion. “Everything is still being studied, including the possibility of subsidies and their volume,” Bahlil stated. Initial estimates suggest that CNG will be 30% cheaper than LPG. “For this 3-kilogram version, it’s just about to be made. And the cost is 30-40% cheaper,” Bahlil said, quoted from Kompas.com on Saturday (2/5/2026). Regarding cylinder durability, the government plans to create new containers for CNG with specifications that can withstand higher pressure. The pressure is equivalent to 2,900-3,600 psi, which is quite high for a 3kg size.
