As a lover of a clean environment, I am delighted to know the
clean river project for the 1995/1996 period will focus on making
the 13 larger rivers passing through Jakarta as clean as they
were in the "Betawi" days. In this relation, all parties should
give their support.

As we know, all rivers in Jakarta are in an alarming
condition. Imagine, Ciliwung River, which was once the pride of
the Betawi people as a means of transportation and, at the same
time, a tourist attraction, now looks awful and is smelly as a
result of wastes from industries, hotels, restaurants, hospitals
and houses.

To ensure the success of the clean river project, I would like
to suggest that the people in charge be equipped with a motorized
boat. The river can also be used for transportation to ease the
congestion on land, which will at the same time serve as a
tourist attraction. The ministers of transportation, tourism,
post and telecommunications, and environment could jointly
consider the matter.
