City to oust schools from business zones

JAKARTA: The city education agency will evict a group of private colleges and vocational schools located in various business districts, which they say are not to be used for educational purposes.

"The administration, along with the Association of Indonesian Private Colleges (Aptisi), has established a team to scrutinize schools, which appear to be seeking a profit while ignoring the students' right to a proper place to study," head of Jakarta Middle and Extended Education Agency, Margani Mustar, was quoted by Antara as saying on Monday.

He went on to say that many of the more than 100 private academies in the city had not yet been registered, with some located in buildings designed for offices and/or shops.

The requirements for a proper facility, number of lecturers and campus location are stipulated in Minister of Education decree No. 222/u/1998 on the guidelines for establishing an educational institution. -- Antara
