City inundated by garbage

PALU, South Sulawesi: Mayor Rully Lamadjido threw his hands up
in exasperation after finding out that of the 469 cubic meter of
garbage the city produces daily, only half is transported to
waste disposal sites.

"I really don't know what to do," he was quoted by the Antara
news agency as saying. "We have tried many things, like hiring
people especially to transport garbage, but it's still not
enough".

Rully said he had offered a contract for city waste management
to some private companies, but there have been no takers so far.

Seven garbage trucks operate daily, far short from the ideal
number of 46. Rully said residents have been complaining about
the garbage around them. (swe)
