Residents of RW 02, Kelurahan Cipayung, Kecamatan Cipayung, East Jakarta, have begun actively implementing a source-separation of waste by preparing 20 segregated waste bins.

‘We support all efforts in every RT/RW in East Jakarta to support environmentally based waste management at the community level,’ said Monang Sinaga, head of the East Jakarta Environmental Service (Suku Dinas Lingkungan Hidup Jakarta Timur), when contacted in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Monang said they are distributing waste bins across the area to help residents get used to disposing of waste by type.

Samsudin, head of RT 06/RW 02, Cipayung, said that to support the programme, RT administrators independently provided 20 segregated waste bins to be placed at several points in the community.

This step is taken as support for the waste-separation programme being intensified by the Jakarta Provincial Government through the East Jakarta Environmental Service (Sudin LH Jakarta Timur).

The waste sorting activity began last week. Twenty bins have been placed at ten different locations to help residents distinguish organic and residual waste from households.

‘We have independently prepared 20 bins to hold both residue and organic waste at ten points. That way, each point has two bins,’ Samsudin said.

In addition to the bins funded by residents, Samsudin said they also received one additional bin donated by the East Jakarta Environmental Service, designated specifically for organic waste.

The organic waste collected will be collected daily by staff of Sudin LH Jakarta Timur for further processing. The waste will be pulped and processed into a waste slurry at the Sudin LH office as part of reducing the volume of waste sent to landfill.

He said the waste sorting programme still needs additional facilities. With about 300 households in the RT/RW area, the need for segregated bins is still far from sufficient.

Currently, ideally there should be an addition of 15 to 17 more segregated bin points to serve all residents effectively.

‘We will try to involve CSR programmes for the provision of these segregated waste bins,’ Samsudin said.

Meanwhile, Irwan Mulyadi, the secretary of RW 02, said the assistance of bins from the East Jakarta Environmental Service is currently very limited. Of the eight RT in RW 02, only five donated bins are available.

This means one organic bin must be shared by two RTs. ‘We hope for more bins; at least 1-2 bins per RT,’ he said.

Irwan added that the success of the waste-sorting programme depends not only on the availability of facilities but also on community awareness of sorting waste from home.

Therefore, the RW authorities continue to urge residents to consistently separate organic and residual waste to create a cleaner and healthier environment.
