In Cilacap Regency, community activity is in full swing from early morning. There are workers heading to industrial areas, students traveling between cities for education, merchants transporting goods, and families traveling for social and economic needs. Amid this activity, trains are one of the modes of transportation that keep people connected to various regions of Java.

As a strategic industrial and energy region on the south coast of Java, Cilacap has high population mobility. The presence of railway services at Cilacap Station supports the rhythm of community life with more efficient, measurable, and time-certain journeys.

PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) recorded that from January to April 2026, 73,433 passengers departed and 76,207 passengers arrived via Cilacap Station. This number increased compared to the same period in 2025, with 65,041 departing passengers and 65,253 arriving passengers.

Departing passengers increased by 12.90 percent, or 8,392 passengers. Meanwhile, arriving passengers grew by 16.79 percent, or 10,954 passengers, compared to the same period the previous year.

Vice President of Corporate Communication at KAI, Anne Purba, said that this growth reflects the increasing need for public transportation that can support economic activity and the community’s daily social mobility.

“At Cilacap Station, trains serve more than just intercity travel. There are workers who ensure industrial activities continue every day, students pursuing education, business actors connecting trade between regions, and people traveling to meet family. This growth in passengers shows that trains are increasingly becoming an important part of the lives of the people of Cilacap,” said Anne.

According to Anne, Cilacap’s position as a center for processing industry, energy, and maritime activities means that the community’s mobility needs continue to grow. Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the processing industry sector contributes the most to Cilacap’s GRDP, accounting for 33.99 percent.

This condition creates high daily population movement, especially for industrial sector workers, logistics distribution, and intercity trade activities. The presence of railway services helps people gain access to more stable travel in the face of high mobility in industrial areas.

The leading services serving Cilacap Station are also a major choice for the community. For long-distance train services, the community is served by the Purwojaya train on the Cilacap-Gambir route, the Wijayakusuma train on the Cilacap-Ketapang route, and the Sancaka Utara train on the Cilacap-Surabaya Pasarturi route. Meanwhile, agglomeration services such as the Joglosemarkerto and Kamandaka trains strengthen connectivity to Yogyakarta, Purwokerto, Solo, and Semarang.

In addition to serving passengers, KAI’s strategic role in Cilacap is also evident in the national logistics sector. This area is home to Indonesia’s largest oil refinery, which supplies about 60 percent of fuel needs in Java. Through rail-based transportation, KAI supports the distribution of Avtur and the transportation of fertilizer to ensure the smooth distribution of energy and the national agricultural sector.

“Rail-based logistics distribution helps maintain the supply chain by providing large carrying capacity and more measurable distribution times. The impact is not only felt by the industrial sector but also by the wider community through the smooth supply of energy and the distribution of agricultural support,” added Anne.

The presence of Cilacap Station also supports local tourism and economic activities. Its location, which is connected to the Tanjung Intan Port area and tourist destinations such as Teluk Penyu and Pantai Jetis, also strengthens the movement of tourists and MSME activities in the southern coastal area of Java.

KAI sees the growth in passengers at Cilacap Station as part of the development of community social and economic activities. For this reason, improvements in services continue to be carried out in terms of passenger facilities, accessibility, and the reliability of train journeys.

“Every train journey carries economic activity and community life within it. KAI will continue to maintain services at Cilacap Station so that community mobility, industrial growth, logistics distribution, and connectivity in the southern part of Java can continue to develop sustainably,” concluded Anne.
