Cianjur ulemas trained to promote Islamic law

Antara, Cianjur

At least 371 ulemas in Cianjur, West Java, underwent training for two days on the promotion of syariah (Islamic law) in the regency, which has a two million population.

Cianjur Regent Wasidi Swastomo said on Tuesday that the training aimed at eliminating confusion and concern among the people about the possible implementation of syariah in the regency.

"A correct explanation on syarih should be given to ulemas and public figures in Cianjur because the public has a misperception that the implementation of syariah would see the regency seceding from the unitary state of Indonesia," Wasidi was quoted by Antara as saying.

"They are prepared to become campaigners and explain the implementation of syariah," said Wasidi, adding that people wanted syariah to be implemented in the regency.

Ulemas participating in the training came from various Muslim social organizations and Muslim non-governmental organizations (NGOs). During the training, senior prominent ulemas and Muslim intellectuals explained the concept of Gerbang Marhamah (Gate of Blessings).

"The Gerbang Marhamah concept is under the country's authority and I'm convinced that nobody will deny this concept," Wasidi said.

After the training, 345 ulemas will be sent throughout the regency to disseminate information about syariah, while the remaining 26 will serve as coordinators stationed in the regency's 26 districts.

At least 45 NGOs and 85 campaigners from various Muslim-based political parties have also pledged to participate in the campaign.

Meanwhile Abdul Halim, chairman of the Ciganjur Indonesian Ulemas Council (MUI), said the training played a significant role in forming Akhlakul Karimah (Good Attitude) as an important element in the implementation of syariah.

"We should explain Akhlakul Karimah to the people as the manifestation of the law to avoid an incorrect perception," Abdul said.
