The head of Cipularang PJR, Police Commissioner Joko Prihantono, has revealed the chronology of the chain-reaction crash on the Cipularang Toll Road at Km 93 B. He said it all began with a problem in the braking of a container truck.

The container truck with plate B-9367-UEL is suspected of experiencing braking problems, he told Antara in a statement on Friday (6 March 2026).

The accident, which occurred on Thursday (5 March) at 20:15 Western Indonesian Time, was caused by brake problems on the container truck. Preliminary findings indicate the container truck was travelling from Bandung towards Jakarta in the left-hand lane.

Upon arrival at the scene, the driver found traffic backed up due to a dump truck that had broken down. However the container truck suffered a brake failure, causing it to strike several vehicles.

The container then attempted to brake but the problem persisted and it struck a pickup truck, triggering the multi-vehicle crash, he said.

Prihantono added that the pile-up involved 10 vehicles and claimed two lives. Four others sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious and were transported to the nearest hospital.

Two of the deceased were the driver and the crewman of the open-back truck, he said.
