Jakarta — President Prabowo Subianto has called the 2026 Chinese New Year celebration, which takes place alongside Ramadan, a genuine testament to the harmony of religious and national life in Indonesia. The message was delivered via video greeting during the Nusantara Lunar Harmony celebration for Chinese New Year 2577 Kongzili on Saturday, 28 February 2026.

The President stated that the timing reflects Indonesia’s identity as a composite nation capable of coexisting amid differences. This year’s Chinese celebration is viewed as having national significance, as it strengthens the spirit of brotherhood and unity.

“The Chinese moon is present alongside the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. This is the true face of Indonesia. Different yet harmonious. Diverse yet united in purpose,” Prabowo said.

He emphasised that the Chinese celebration is not merely a religious observance, but a national moment that embodies the values of togetherness, solidarity, and mutual respect among all citizens. The festival demonstrates that Indonesia was built by all sectors of society from different ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds.

The President stressed that a great nation does not fear difference, but rather cultivates diversity as a source of national strength. This principle is evident in the 2026 Lunar Festival celebrations held across various regions.

“This harmony exists throughout the archipelago. This proves that Indonesian unity is not merely a slogan—it is a living reality,” Prabowo said.

The Nusantara Lunar Harmony Celebration takes place concurrently in numerous cities, including Medan, Palembang, Batam, Bogor, Semarang, Solo, Surabaya, Pontianak, Singkawang, Makassar, and Manado. The activities showcase cultural diversity, community engagement, and cross-community interaction spaces.

Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar considers the Lunar celebration coinciding with Ramadan to be a powerful symbol of religious unity in Indonesia. The festival creates a platform for cross-cultural, cross-religious, and intergenerational dialogue.

“The glowing red lanterns of China, the cultural parades, the small and medium enterprise markets, as well as the various acculturation displays we witness today, are wonderful symbols of how these two great traditions—Lunar and Ramadan—can complement one another in a spirit of togetherness,” Nasaruddin said.

He noted that the Nusantara Lunar Harmony celebration serves to strengthen brotherhood, foster tolerance, and reinforce the values of gotong royong amongst communities. The occasion is also intended to inspire younger generations to appreciate and embrace Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage.
