Year 2026 represents a special moment for Indonesia, as the festivities of Chinese New Year 2577 (Kongzili Calendar) coincide directly with the sanctity of the holy month of Ramadan.

This rare calendar phenomenon not only presents cities with aesthetic visual appeal but also reinforces Indonesia’s identity as a global laboratory of tolerance through various cultural celebrations and humanitarian initiatives.

Lantern Seas Behind Ramadan Reverence

In “The City of a Thousand Temples,” Singkawang, thousands of residents filled the main streets to witness the Lantern Parade. Hundreds of illuminated decorated vehicles stood alongside dragon performances, lion dances, and centipede dances, creating magnificent scenes along Diponegoro Street and Niaga Street.

Singkawang Mayor Tjhai Chui Mie emphasised that lanterns are not merely decorations, but symbols of prayers and optimism. He highlighted the beauty of blending the new hopes characteristic of Chinese New Year with the patience and sincerity embodied by Ramadan. This synergy has proven to generate tangible economic impact; the combination of the Chinese New Year Festival and Cap Go Meh with the Ramadan Fair successfully boosted tourist visits and revitalised local micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

Inter-Faith “Sharing Light” Initiative

The spirit of harmony resonated to the capital through the Sharing Light Donation programme. The Deputy Minister of Creative Economy, Irene Umar, alongside the President’s Special Envoy for Tourism, Zita Anjani, organised a social action benefiting 1,000 orphaned children from various religions and orphanages.

Irene Umar emphasised that the value of sharing is a bridge strengthening relationships among communities amid diversity. The event was not merely a charitable distribution, but a meeting space for the young “Golden Indonesia” generation to understand one another and empathise. The atmosphere became warmer with motivational sessions from figures such as Merry Riana, Aniwayang performances, and shared breaking-of-fast moments involving children from different faith backgrounds.

Message of Unity Towards Golden Indonesia

The series of activities in Singkawang and Jakarta sent a powerful message about social solidarity. The government, through the Ministry of Creative Economy and the Coordinating Ministry for Infrastructure, views social care as key to collective comfort when celebrating major religious occasions that coincide.

These two significant moments—Chinese New Year, which teaches hope, and Ramadan, which cultivates compassion—have blended into a collective force. Through collaboration between government, private sector, and community, Indonesia once again demonstrates that cultural and religious differences are indeed a powerful energy for building a more advanced, harmonious nation that upholds human values.
