The global competition in electric vehicle technology is heating up, with China advancing rapidly in the development of ultra-fast charging, while the United States is still striving to catch up despite showing significant progress.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Chinese automaker BYD claims to have introduced electric vehicle technology capable of recharging in just five minutes, matching the speed of refuelling conventional cars. This innovation is in the spotlight amid the slowdown in electric vehicle demand in several major markets, including China and the United States.

On the other hand, the electric vehicle market in the United States faced pressure throughout last year. Sales plummeted sharply, triggered by weakening demand and the end of the US$7,500 tax incentive for new electric vehicle purchases.

Nevertheless, there is a bright spot in developments in the Land of Uncle Sam, namely the rapid increase in fast-charging infrastructure. Public fast-charging stations—which allow electric vehicles to charge faster than at home—have grown significantly.

Based on the latest study from electric vehicle charging analytics firm Paren, the number of fast-charging locations in the United States surged by around 87% from January to November 2025.

This growth indicates an acceleration in infrastructure development, which is one of the key factors in promoting electric vehicle adoption.

However, the technological gap between China and the United States remains evident, particularly in charging speed.

While China is already moving towards a user experience equivalent to petrol-powered vehicles, the United States is still focused on expanding the charging network to support the broader electric vehicle ecosystem.

These developments will determine the future direction of the global automotive industry competition, where speed, convenience, and infrastructure availability will be the main factors in attracting consumer interest in electric vehicles.

BYD, which recently surpassed Tesla in electric vehicle sales, stated earlier this month that its newest charging station can charge the company’s latest “Blade” battery electric vehicles from low power to 70% in five minutes. In nine minutes, the battery can be almost fully charged.

BYD is bringing its fast-charging technology to Europe this year. This poses another challenge for Western car manufacturers competing with Chinese rivals there and domestically—and potentially in the US one day.
