Chinese Consumers Shifting to Coconut-Based Coffee, Deputy Agriculture Minister Says Indonesia Stands to Benefit
Jakarta – Deputy Agriculture Minister Sudaryono has stated that changing consumption patterns among Chinese consumers are driving increased demand for coconut products from Indonesia.
The trend has emerged from a new habit of consuming coffee mixed with coconut milk.
Sudaryono, known locally as Mas Dar, described this shift in consumption patterns as an export opportunity for Indonesia.
“Coconut is currently in demand in China. With China’s population of over 1.1 billion, they appear to be shifting their diet. It turns out they are drinking coffee mixed with coconut milk,” said Mas Dar during a meeting at the Agriculture Ministry Office in Jakarta on Thursday (12 March 2026).
Sudaryono stated that the demanded commodities extend beyond coconut milk. Coconut water also commands strong market demand.
The coconut processing industry in Indonesia has developed significantly with an export-oriented focus.
“Some processing facilities, particularly in North Maluku, already have established industries with existing markets,” said Mas Dar.
The surge in export demand faces domestic challenges. Most coconut trees in Indonesia are elderly and their productivity has declined.
This situation is prompting the government to prepare a plantation rejuvenation programme.
The government has allocated Rp9.95 trillion for the programme.
“That total of Rp9.95 trillion is divided over three years,” said Mas Dar.
