Jakarta, VIVA – Deputy for Investment Promotion at the Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming/BKPM, Nurul Ichwan, revealed that a Chinese battery company plans to increase its investment in Indonesia. The investment interest was conveyed in connection with People's Republic of China Prime Minister Li Qiang's visit to Indonesia on 24 May 2025.

"I can only say that there is [a Chinese battery company investing in Indonesia]. Because the party concerned does not yet wish to be identified, but they exist," said Nurul at Hotel Mangkuluhur, Jakarta, on Wednesday, 28 May 2025.

Nurul said the Chinese company planning to increase its investment share in Indonesia operates in the battery sector. However, he did not elaborate on which company would be adding to its investments in Indonesia.

"This means on top of what already exists in batteries. There are still those interested in entering our market," he explained.

However, Nurul disclosed that this additional investment interest from China is not related to Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL) or Huayou.

"No, I also forget the name — it's difficult. But I cannot declare it yet, as this is still preliminary. What is clear is that they expressed interest in the entire ecosystem, from upstream to downstream, and they still wish to further explore working with Indonesia," he added.

Previously, PRC Prime Minister Li Qiang arrived in Indonesia on the afternoon of Saturday, 24 May 2025. Li Qiang brought major Chinese business figures on his visit to Jakarta.

Minister of Investment and Downstreaming/Head of BKPM, Rosan Perkasa Roeslani, also conveyed that Indonesia and China would discuss further the significant potential for strengthening economic cooperation, particularly through the expansion of Chinese investment.

"He did not come alone, but also with his business delegation of approximately 60 entrepreneurs, and these are major business figures. Not only those who have already invested in Indonesia, but also those who have not yet invested in Indonesia," said Rosan Roeslani to reporters on Saturday, 24 May 2025.
