Beijing (ANTARA) - Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Beijing on Tuesday (14/4) to discuss bilateral issues while preparing for a meeting between President Xi Jinping and President Vladimir Putin.

“Both sides also conducted communication and coordination regarding preparations for the meeting of the heads of state of the two countries this year,” stated the website of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, accessed by ANTARA on Wednesday.

During the meeting, Wang Yi said the international situation is experiencing severe turbulence, the dangers of unilateral hegemony are increasing, the global governance system is facing major changes, and efforts for peace and human development are confronting heavy challenges.

“Facing a complex and ever-changing external environment, under the leadership of President Xi Jinping and President Vladimir Putin, China-Russia relations remain ‘unobstructed by clouds obscuring the view’, and cooperation in various fields remains ‘solid despite repeated forging’,” Wang Yi remarked.

“Both sides must seize historic opportunities, follow the trend of the times, fully implement the consensus reached by the two heads of state, and promote the China-Russia strategic coordination partnership and mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields,” Wang Yi added.

Wang Yi also noted that China and Russia need to strengthen cooperation within multilateral frameworks such as the UN, Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), and BRICS, while continuing to maintain strategic coordination on major international and regional issues, and jointly practising multilateralism.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Lavrov stated that Russia and China are comprehensive strategic coordination partners that respect each other and have a high level of mutual trust.

“Russia will implement the consensus of the heads of state, continue to strengthen high-level official communications, deepen pragmatic cooperation, and achieve mutually beneficial outcomes,” Lavrov said.

Lavrov acknowledged that the current international situation faces serious challenges, with some countries attempting to form various ‘small groups’ to contain Russia and China.

“The two countries need to align various global initiatives proposed by President Xi Jinping with President Putin’s ideas of the ‘Greater Eurasian Partnership’ and ‘Eurasian Security Architecture’, maintain coordination and cooperation on the multilateral stage as well as in international and regional affairs, and jointly safeguard the security and stability of the international system,” Lavrov stated.

Foreign Ministers Wang Yi and Lavrov also discussed international and regional issues, including the US-Iran conflict, the Asia-Pacific situation, and the Ukraine crisis.

Following the meeting, the two foreign ministers signed a 2026 consultation plan between the foreign ministries of the two countries.
