China Offers Energy Guarantees to Taiwan, Accompanied by Unification Appeals

China is offering energy supply guarantees to Taiwan amid global tensions stemming from the Middle East conflict. This proposal is tied to Beijing’s efforts to encourage Taiwan to accept a reunification scheme. Competition for alternative energy sources is intensifying among various countries. Disruptions to shipments through the Strait of Hormuz are tightening global supplies. Taiwan has long relied on energy imports. Around one-third of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) needs come from Qatar. Taiwan does not import energy from China. Chen Binhua, spokesperson for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, stated that peaceful reunification would strengthen Taiwan’s energy resilience. “We are willing to provide stable and reliable energy and resource security to the people of Taiwan, so they can lead better lives,” Chen said in Beijing. He assessed that support from the strong motherland would offer better protection for energy supplies. The Taiwanese government asserts that the island’s future is determined by its own people. China is offering a ‘one country, two systems’ scheme. This model promises autonomy for Taiwan if it comes under Beijing’s control. No major political party in Taiwan supports this option. Last October, the Xinhua news agency detailed the claimed benefits post-reunification. China promises economic support and emphasises that the territory must be governed by patriots. Beijing continues to keep the option of using military force open to take control of Taiwan.
