China a boon for managers
JAKARTA (JP): Thanks to China's rapid economic growth, Asia's managers are expecting annual pay increases of up to sixty percent, a recent study conducted by The World's Executive's Digest says.
The Hong Kong-based publication also says that "executives with the best pay prospects are those in strategic regional positions which include responsibility for the China market".
The survey, which was jointly conducted by global consulting firm the Corporate Resources Group, shows that "the hottest industries for executives are telecommunications and fast-moving consumer goods."
In addition, the study also offers encouraging salary projections for the region's urban professionals in other sectors besides telecommunications and consumer.
"...Managers and professionals can benefit from strong trends that are driving executive compensation and mobility in the region...the development of a strategic regional business perspective, acceleration of infrastructure projects and expansion of consumer demand," the magazine says.
The report also scrutinizes the level of salaries for executives in the region.
Tokyo's senior managers are the highest paid with annual gross salaries averaging US$154,525. They are followed by Hong Kong- based managers with $137,206 and those in Singapore with $113,744.
In Southeast Asia, Jakarta's managers are paid annually around $61,106, which are slightly less than those in Kuala Lumpur with $79,708.
According to the survey, Jakarta's senior professionals are relatively better paid than those in Bangkok, Manila, Ho Chi Minh City and Beijing.
The study, which also ranks the living qualities of the world's major cities, placed Jakarta in the 80th place, beating Manila (82nd), Bangkok (84th) and Ho Chi Minh City (90th).
The Indonesian capital, however, ranked well below Singapore which is ranked ninth in the world and Kuala Lumpur in the 52nd place. (hdj)
