China a boon for managers

JAKARTA (JP): Thanks to China's rapid economic growth, Asia's
managers are expecting annual pay increases of up to sixty
percent, a recent study conducted by The World's Executive's
Digest says.

The Hong Kong-based publication also says that "executives
with the best pay prospects are those in strategic regional
positions which include responsibility for the China market".

The survey, which was jointly conducted by global consulting
firm the Corporate Resources Group, shows that "the hottest
industries for executives are telecommunications and fast-moving
consumer goods."

In addition, the study also offers encouraging salary
projections for the region's urban professionals in other sectors
besides telecommunications and consumer.

"...Managers and professionals can benefit from strong trends
that are driving executive compensation and mobility in the
region...the development of a strategic regional business
perspective, acceleration of infrastructure projects and
expansion of consumer demand," the magazine says.

The report also scrutinizes the level of salaries for
executives in the region.

Tokyo's senior managers are the highest paid with annual gross
salaries averaging US$154,525. They are followed by Hong Kong-
based managers with $137,206 and those in Singapore with
$113,744.

In Southeast Asia, Jakarta's managers are paid annually around
$61,106, which are slightly less than those in Kuala Lumpur with
$79,708.

According to the survey, Jakarta's senior professionals are
relatively better paid than those in Bangkok, Manila, Ho Chi Minh
City and Beijing.

The study, which also ranks the living qualities of the
world's major cities, placed Jakarta in the 80th place, beating
Manila (82nd), Bangkok (84th) and Ho Chi Minh City (90th).

The Indonesian capital, however, ranked well below Singapore
which is ranked ninth in the world and Kuala Lumpur in the 52nd
place. (hdj)
