Children and Pregnant Women Poisoned by Free Nutritious Meal Programme in Demak
Hundreds of people are suspected of food poisoning after consuming free nutritious meal (MBG) portions in Kebonagung sub-district, Demak Regency. The victims include students, children under five or toddlers, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers.
They had previously consumed the MBG distributed on Saturday, 18 April 2026. The following day, they experienced symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, and vomiting.
The total number of victims experiencing symptoms is around 187 people. As of Monday, 20 April 2026, 68 people are still undergoing inpatient treatment, while 66 other victims are receiving outpatient care.
Central Java Deputy Governor Taj Yasin has reminded authorities about time management and the distribution of MBG menus to prevent poisoning. According to him, food that has been left too long should not be consumed as it is no longer fit for consumption.
“Usually, poisoning occurs because the schedule is not properly arranged. This food has a consumption period, so it must be delivered on time and consumed immediately,” said Taj Yasin when asked about the poisoning incident in Demak on Tuesday, 21 April 2026.
He reminded the public not to delay consuming MBG after receiving it. “Do not store the food first and then eat it later,” he stated.
Taj Yasin also warned MBG service providers that they would be sanctioned if violations occur. “There have already been cases of kitchen closures in Central Java. This serves as a stern warning,” he added.
