Failing the National Selection Based on Test (SNBT) is a bitter reality for both children and families who have worked hard together. However, feelings of sadness and disappointment must not be allowed to linger.

After emotions stabilise, the next step is to strategise: whether to apply to private universities, attempt direct admission, enrol in government vocational schools, or take a gap year.

During this vulnerable phase, full parental support is crucial to help children regain motivation to rebuild their dreams.

Adult Clinical Psychologist Divani Aery Lovian, M.Psi., explained that physical and emotional presence from parents is the most fundamental form of support during recovery.

“Sometimes children don’t need quick solutions, but someone who stays by their side without judgment,” Divani said when contacted on Friday (29 May 2026).

Parents should not force their children to find solutions or push advice if the child is not mentally ready for deep conversation.

“It’s okay if the child isn’t immediately ready to discuss their feelings or thoughts,” Divani added.

In this transitional phase, acceptance plays a critical role in fostering new motivation within the child.

Families must demonstrate that their love remains unconditional, regardless of exam results not meeting initial plans.

“If our love and acceptance depend on the outcome, it becomes conditional,” Divani stressed.

Each child’s measure of success varies greatly; comparing them only wounds their feelings and triggers low self-esteem.

“Comparing them to those who passed public universities or others with better results only amplifies shame and causes children to withdraw further,” Divani said.
