Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) has called for genuine synergy and collaboration between ministries and government agencies to prevent violence against children, including averting further cases of children taking their own lives.

"We hope that cross-ministerial and institutional bodies will truly carry out prevention measures simultaneously so that no more children end their lives. Prevention must start from the family, schools, and strengthening children's resilience," said KPAI member Diyah Puspitarini when contacted in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Her remarks were in response to the case of a 14-year-old girl who allegedly took her own life in Penajam Paser Utara (PPU), East Kalimantan.

Police are currently still investigating the case, including looking into allegations of bullying.

"KPAI is coordinating with all parties regarding this incident, particularly in PPU, so that the cause of the deceased child's death can be determined with certainty. And we must ensure the child is not subjected to negative stigma," said Diyah Puspitarini.

The tragic incident claiming the life of the teenage girl occurred on Thursday (12 February).

The victim's death was first discovered by her aunt.

Two weeks earlier, a case of a child allegedly taking their own life occurred in Ngada Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), on Thursday (29 January), reportedly due to the family's economic conditions.

A boy with the initials YBR (10), a Year 4 pupil at a state primary school in Ngada Regency, NTT, ended his life leaving behind a letter for his mother.

During his lifetime, the victim lived with his elderly grandmother, whilst his mother, identified by the initials MGT (47), lived in another village with two of the victim's siblings. Meanwhile, two of the victim's half-siblings were already adults and had migrated to Papua and Kalimantan for work.

The victim's mother was the sole provider for five children, including the victim.

The victim was the youngest of five siblings.

His biological father left to seek work elsewhere whilst the victim was still in his mother's womb and has never returned since.
