Chicken and Egg Prices Remain Elevated; BPS Issues Warning
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Broiler chicken and layer egg prices are showing serious pressure as Ramadan approaches. The latest data shows that national chicken prices have already exceeded the upper limit of the government’s Reference Sales Price (HAP). This situation warrants attention because chicken and eggs are primary consumption commodities during Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr.
Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, Head of the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), described pressure on animal protein commodities as something that cannot be ignored.
“What needs to be the focus is broiler chicken because broiler chicken and beef are certainly the main menu during Eid celebrations especially,” she said.
Nationally, broiler chicken prices have now moved above government guidelines. The increase in the Price Index (IPH) has also spread to more than two hundred districts.
“Broiler chicken nationally is now above the HAP at Rp41,013 per kilogramme. Currently, there are 209 regencies/cities experiencing IPH increases for broiler chicken,” explained Amalia.
Several regions have recorded sharp spikes far exceeding the upper limit of the reference price guidance. This condition indicates supply pressure in a number of areas.
“For example, in Bangka Regency the IPH change is 28.6% and this is already 3.29% above the HAP. Even in Boven Digoel it is 46% above the HAP and the current price is around Rp58,611,” she said.
Not only chicken, but layer egg prices have also remained above the upper limit of the HAP despite modest declines in the national average.
“Layer eggs are currently Rp32,000 per kilogramme, but this is still above the HAP upper limit. And the number of regencies/cities experiencing IPH increases is growing,” said Amalia.
Several regions have recorded significant spikes. This situation is considered to require anticipation through strengthened distribution and supply.
“In Natuna Regency the price of layer eggs has reached Rp37,972. In Bekasi too it is already above the HAP limit by 4.26% and has risen by 4.87%,” she noted.
With demand almost certain to increase during Ramadan, BPS reminds of the importance of swift measures to maintain supply-demand balance.
“Several regencies/cities need to receive attention to increase layer egg supplies so that approaching Eid can be better controlled,” she concluded.
