One chicken seller at Pasar Kramat Jati, Ahmad (44), stated that chicken price increases began early in Ramadhan and have been gradually rising towards Eid al-Fitr. “Prices started going up from the beginning of Ramadhan, but they’re rising gradually now. Currently, chicken costs around Rp50,000 per kilogramme, whereas previously it was still Rp45,000,” Ahmad said at Pasar Kramat Jati in East Jakarta on Thursday.

According to him, demand from buyers has increased as residents begin preparing various food requirements for breaking the fast and Eid festivities. “Buyers are becoming more numerous, and especially when approaching Eid, it’s usually even busier,” he noted.

Additionally, price increases are typically influenced by increased supply from suppliers responding to higher market demand. “If supplies are well maintained, the price surge is estimated to remain manageable,” Ahmad said.

Similar observations came from a beef seller at Pasar Jatinegara, Jaka (39). Jaka stated that beef prices have started rising compared to a few days earlier, though the increases remain within reasonable limits. “Currently, beef costs around Rp145,000 to Rp150,000 per kilogramme, whereas previously it was still Rp130,000-135,000. Usually, about a week before Eid, prices can rise again due to high demand,” he explained.

Despite the price increases, he noted that buyer interest remains quite high, with many customers purchasing beef for household needs and food business preparations ahead of Eid. According to Jaka, food price increases before major religious holidays are an almost annual occurrence. “It’s naturally because of increased consumption as people prepare traditional Eid dishes like opor ayam, rendang, and beef stew,” he said.

Whilst prices are gradually rising, vendors assured that stocks of both chicken and beef at the markets remain adequately available.

Previously, Trade Minister Budi Santoso assured that basic commodity prices ahead of Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah remain under control. Following a market cleanliness initiative in Jakarta on Wednesday (11 March), Budi stated that commodity price monitoring is conducted regularly through the Market and Basic Commodity Monitoring System (SP2KP), which monitors prices online across various regions in Indonesia.

“Based on our monitoring through SP2KP, we have online price surveillance across Indonesia at 550 market points or around 514 districts/cities. Currently, thank God, basic commodity prices are controlled, supplies are guaranteed, and prices are stable,” Budi explained.

Furthermore, based on a direct inspection at Pasar Induk Kramat Jati in East Jakarta, he stated that residents have begun shopping to fulfil their Eid needs. “With Eid approaching, based on our market inspection, many buyers and visitors are arriving or increasing—more men and women shopping,” Budi Santoso noted.
