Chee's fate still unclear
SINGAPORE (Reuter): The fate of prominent Singapore opposition figure Chee Soon Juan remained unclear yesterday after a marathon parliamentary hearing over charges of contempt against him and three of his colleagues.
Chee, the secretary-general of the opposition Singapore Democratic Party, and the other SDP members faced 12 hours of questioning among them on Thursday on allegations they had deliberately misled a parliamentary select committee in August.
If found guilty by parliament, Chee and the others could be fined up to S$50,000 (US$35,460) each or jailed.
Parliament could decide to refer the matter to the attorney- general for possible prosecution. If they were then convicted in the courts and sentenced beyond certain minimum fines or jail terms, they could be barred from contesting future elections.
