Detectives from the Central Java Police’s Cyber Crime Directorate have officially named a woman identified as L as a suspect in a viral social media case involving a “racist comment contest”. The decision followed the police upgrading the case from investigation to formal inquiry on Monday, 1 June 2026.

The case began with a social media video posted in early May showing L allegedly organising a provocative contest, offering Rp100,000 in cash to netizens who posted the most racist comments. The post drew widespread condemnation for spreading hate speech and provoking issues related to ethnicity, religion, race, and intergroup relations (SARA).

Evidence and Criminal Liability

Director of the Central Java Police Cyber Crime Directorate, Senior Commissioner Himawan Sutanto Saragih, stated that the decision to name L as a suspect was based on a series of witness testimonies and evidence gathered over recent weeks, deemed sufficiently strong.

“We have named L as a suspect. Investigators have also found sufficient evidence to charge her in this case,” Himawan said in Semarang on Monday (1/6). She faces charges under the Electronic Information and Transactions (ITE) Law, with a maximum penalty of four years in prison.

Despite her suspect status, police have not yet decided to detain L. “Investigators are still monitoring the ongoing inquiry process,” Himawan added.

Police Family Claim and Institutional Response

The case gained further public attention after L claimed in her video that she was unafraid of legal proceedings, stating she was the child of a high-ranking police officer—a remark that sparked backlash online for suggesting immunity from the law.

In response, Central Java Police Public Relations Head, Senior Commissioner Artanto, confirmed L is the daughter of a mid-level Polri officer holding the rank of commissioner serving within Central Java Police and the Police Academy (Akpol). However, Artanto emphasised the legal process would proceed professionally regardless of the suspect’s family background.
