Detectives from the Central Java Police\u2019s Cyber Crime Directorate\nhave officially named a woman identified as L as a suspect in a viral\nsocial media case involving a \u201cracist comment contest\u201d. The decision\nfollowed the police upgrading the case from investigation to formal\ninquiry on Monday, 1 June 2026.<\/p>\n
The case began with a social media video posted in early May showing\nL allegedly organising a provocative contest, offering Rp100,000 in cash\nto netizens who posted the most racist comments. The post drew\nwidespread condemnation for spreading hate speech and provoking issues\nrelated to ethnicity, religion, race, and intergroup relations\n(SARA).<\/p>\n

Director of the Central Java Police Cyber Crime Directorate, Senior\nCommissioner Himawan Sutanto Saragih, stated that the decision to name L\nas a suspect was based on a series of witness testimonies and evidence\ngathered over recent weeks, deemed sufficiently strong.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have named L as a suspect. Investigators have also found\nsufficient evidence to charge her in this case,\u201d Himawan said in\nSemarang on Monday (1\/6). She faces charges under the Electronic\nInformation and Transactions (ITE) Law, with a maximum penalty of four\nyears in prison.<\/p>\n
Despite her suspect status, police have not yet decided to detain L.\n\u201cInvestigators are still monitoring the ongoing inquiry process,\u201d\nHimawan added.<\/p>\n
