Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Central Jakarta City Government has urged residents to resume sorting waste from the source, noting that the city is currently in a waste emergency following Bantargebang’s overload.

‘The waste sorting activity is not new actually because it has been carried out since 2020,’ said Martua Sitorus, Head of the City Planning and Living Environment Division (Kabag PKLH) of the Central Jakarta Administration, in Jakarta on Wednesday.

He said that this time the waste separation campaign is a mass movement that had been launched by Governor of DKI Jakarta Pramono Anung on May 10.

According to him, Governor Instruction (Ingub) Number 5 of 2026 is a policy from the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government regarding the Source-based Waste Sorting and Processing as a strategic step to reduce the volume of waste directly from households.

‘Perhaps Pak RW or Bu RW who used to receive buckets, sacks, scales that were distributed by the Sudin LH at the time, because this is based on Pergub Number 77 of 2020; at that time the instruction was that every resident must establish a sorting home within one RT environment and later develop to the RW,’ he said.

However, he added, the movement has not yet run to its full potential, so this movement must be promoted again because waste is currently in a state of emergency starting from Bantargebang overload in waste reception.

Martua also urged all elements of society to cooperate in tackling Jakarta’s waste problems, especially in Central Jakarta.

‘If only the government were trying, it would be impossible to resolve this issue alone. Therefore, there needs to be cooperation from all elements of society,’ he said.

Earlier, Governor Pramono Anung said that the source-based waste sorting programme is expected to reduce the burden of waste disposal at Bantargebang Integrated Waste Disposal Site (TPST Bantargebang).

‘Officially, the Jakarta Government is conducting waste sorting activities in line with the governor’s instruction. And this programme is not half-hearted because it is happening simultaneously in five cities and on the Thousand Islands to implement waste sorting,’ Pramono said (10/5).

He added that when the waste-sorting programme runs effectively, the waste problems that have long afflicted Jakarta can be tackled quickly because if organic and inorganic waste are separated, it would reduce the burden of waste disposal to Bantargebang TPST, and the waste sent there later would only be residue.
