The Central Jakarta City Government is intensifying monitoring in the Tanah Abang market area during Ramadan. One hundred joint personnel have been deployed to anticipate the return of illegal parking and street vendors who often encroach on roads and sidewalks.

Wali Kota (Mayor) of Central Jakarta, Arifin, stated that this enforcement is a follow-up to the cleanup of illegal stalls conducted at the beginning of Ramadan. Intensive monitoring is key, considering that Tanah Abang remains a major shopping destination for the public in the lead-up to Eid al-Fitr.

“Because we know that Tanah Abang is still a popular choice for people to shop for Eid necessities, not only for themselves and their families, but also for resale, wholesale, and distribution to other places,” said Arifin to reporters on Thursday (February 26).

Focus on Peak Hours

To prevent vendors from expanding onto the streets, Arifin has stationed officers from the Satpol PP (Public Order Agency) and the DKI Jakarta Transportation Department at several vulnerable points.

He acknowledged that areas with high activity, such as Tanah Abang, tend to become chaotic again if monitoring is relaxed. “Indeed, in some places, if monitoring is reduced, they tend to revert to their old habits,” he said.

Regarding the operational aspects, Arifin explained that monitoring is focused on the market’s operating hours, not 24 hours a day.

“In Tanah Abang, we can see that it starts to quiet down around 5 pm. So, monitoring is focused on peak hours, from around 10 am to 4 or 5 pm,” he explained.

Dialogue Without Resistance

In the enforcement process, Arifin ensured that there would be no clashes or resistance from the vendors. His team prioritizes direct dialogue to encourage vendors to return to their stalls.

“Previously, our Transportation Department deployed around 40 personnel. The Satpol PP deployed between 50 and 70, in shifts,” said Arifin regarding the number of personnel deployed.

In addition to security, PPSU (Public Infrastructure and Facilities Management) officers have also been deployed to maintain cleanliness. This is because the volume of waste tends to increase along with the high level of activity in the largest textile market in Southeast Asia.

Arifin reminded that orderliness is a shared interest. A clean and comfortable environment will attract more buyers.

“If it’s dirty and messy, it’s difficult to walk around, and people will be less likely to come to Tanah Abang,” he added. (Far/P-2)

The DKI Jakarta Transportation Department will address illegal parking by recruiting parking attendants who have been operating on the streets as official partners.
