Four people were reported dead after being buried under a waste landslide at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Management Facility (ITFS), Bekasi City, on Sunday 8 March 2026. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung expressed his condolences over the tragic incident. According to him, the waste landslide at the ITFS Bantargebang was caused by high-intensity rainfall over an extended period.

“The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government extends its deepest condolences for the deaths of four people in the landslide of the waste mountain in Zone 4 of the Bantargebang ITFS that occurred last Sunday, specifically at 14.30, due to heavy rain and prolonged duration,” he said at Jakarta City Hall on Monday 9 March 2026.

Pramono suspected the incident was caused by extreme rainfall that occurred over the past weekend. In addition to causing fatalities, the incident also closed operational roads and blocked a river in the area with waste material spanning 40 metres.

“This is clearly an unplanned, unexpected event resulting from heavy and prolonged rain, and the already high waste piles causing a slide or landslide that resulted in four fatalities,” he said.

Pramono stated that the Jakarta Provincial Environmental Services (DLH) had launched emergency response operations since the incident occurred. This was done to search for victims still trapped beneath the debris. Handling was also conducted to restore waste management services promptly.

“Response efforts were carried out by a cross-institutional joint team involving Basarnas, Metro Jaya Police, the Military, Jakarta and Bekasi City BPBD, Fire and Rescue Service, and local authorities supported by 19 heavy excavators and seven ambulances operated during the evacuation process,” he said.

Pramono ensured that the Jakarta Provincial Government would provide worker compensation insurance (BPJS Ketenagakerjaan) for deceased victims who were DLH contract workers. Meanwhile, medical treatment costs for injured victims would be fully covered by the Jakarta Provincial Government.

Based on data until Monday at 10.00 WIB, four people had died from the incident. Meanwhile, four people were found alive. However, five people were suspected to still be trapped and remained under search.

Pramono stated that because of the landslide, he was temporarily closing services in Zone 4A of the Bantargebang ITFS. However, waste deliveries to the final disposal facility would continue.

“As a mitigation measure, services in Zone 4A are temporarily closed. Waste deliveries to the Bantargebang ITFS are minimised operationally and diverted to Zone 3, with two new points being prepared whilst clean-up is carried out,” he said.

He added that a special meeting was also held to address the Bantargebang ITFS situation. He stated that the handling would be carried out promptly so that services could return to normal operations.
